redxdress posted a photo:This is the F-train, in its above-ground section between the Smith St. and Carroll St. stations. This particular style of train car is my absolute favorite. You can't see the inside, but these wide cars were designed to run on the IND and/or BMT tracks, and have multi-colored yellow and orange seats arranged in different directions (rather than the straight benches that just run along the side walls of the train, parallel to the train itself). These cheerful seats are not only comfortable (you can sort of disappear into a corner when you're tired, put your feet up if it's not crowded, etc.), but they also form little conversation areas, which are fun when you're with a group. I think this type of train car was designed in the 1970s, and I really hope they are not phased out anytime soon. The newer style of trains (currently seen on the L and some IRT trains) are nice enough, but they just don't feel as homey and personable. Sterile and modern, I suppose those might better represent The Machine Age. I feel like these good old trains represent more of an idealistic harmony between people and machines: transportation that might have been designed as functional/utilitarian, but also friendly and familiar. I wish more machines were like these...Anyway, to be honest I wasn't thinking about any of this stuff when I took the picture, and I'll have to link to a photo showing the interior at some point. At the time, I was mostly just admiring the train's exterior! After I uploaded the shot to Flickr, I came up with the title. Honestly, these trains tend to be more bulky and lumbering than sleek and speedy (i.e, not so much a silver bullet at all) but I still love them. I have so many memories of them from when I was younger, especially commuting to and from school. It's still always something of a relief to climb aboard on my way home, day or night, and feel like a mechanical magic carpet is transporting me there. :)I could never live in a place without good public transportation, for the long-term, I mean. This much I've learned. But more specifically, there's some sort of local pride or homegrown affection for this *particular* type of train. I've been to the transit museum and seen all kinds of wonderful trains from times gone by, and imagined the Brooklynites (or New Yorkers in general) who loved their own trains as much as I love my own. I hope so. Trains should be loved. ;)

Hello - it's been a long time, but here's a quick fun clip - Rimma did the fabulous video taking - you can hear her saying Just keep taking lots of pictures.I haven't been in salt water for 15 years...Judith had the excellent idea of pouring warm water on our heads after we came out so that we a) warmed up and b) washed some of the salt out of our hair.
